Drilling on the Herkimer farm, 2.41 km northwest of the center of Mattoon (Devonian of the United States)

Where: Coles County, Illinois (39.5° N, 88.4° W: paleocoordinates 38.0° S, 36.1° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Grand Tower Limestone Formation, Middle Devonian (393.3 - 382.7 Ma)

• collection comes from "underground cavity 15.2 m below the base of the Chattanooga or New Albany black shale...it seems plausible that the encountered cave is in the upper strata of the Grand Tower Limestone, which is presumed to a correlative of the Detrior River Series and indeed with the uppermost unit of the series, the Anderdon Limestone."

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; limestone

Reposited in the UMMP

• "A large number of external casts of brachiopods, corals, and charophytes were also recovered from the well... all brachiopods were juveniles that had not developed enough adult characters for positive taxonomic placement...The corals are being studied by Dr. William A. Oliver...The charophytes are similar to Trochiliscus bellatulus."
