Environment/lithology: brown, silty limestone and silty, calcareous shale

• Limestone, 2-10 cm thick beds; interbeds of calcareous silty shale decreasing in thickness upwards. "The limestone beds are mainly light to medium brown calcsiltite or silty limestone, though about 10% of them are finely sandy. Most beds contain scattered fossil fragments of coarse sand size, often pyritized. Occasional beds are very coarsely calcarenitic with as little as 20% finely sandy micritic matrix. In the uppermost few meters of the unit sandy beds seem to be absent and concurrently the shale interbeds are reduced to thin seams. The uppermost 50 cm consists of calcarenitic (echinodermal) limestone, with silty micrite matrix, in closely packed nubbly beds without intervening shale."

Collection methods: Colonial corals occur about 17 or 18 m below the top of the unit; corals are uncommon elsewhere in the formation.
