Fauna of fossiliferous shales of northern Moravia, Czech Republic (Devonian of Czech Republic)

Where: Moravia, Czech Republic (49.9° N, 17.5° E: paleocoordinates 28.5° S, 40.8° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Gyroceratites gracilis, Nowakia holynensis zone, Stinava-Chabicov Formation, Eifelian (393.3 - 387.7 Ma)

• "area belongs to the middle part of the Sternberk-Horni Benesov Belt...rocks are part of the north eastern projection of the "Moravsky Beroun islet".

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; micaceous, brown, silty mudstone

• "Fauna is a pelagic community sensu Boucot, 1970. Environment was relatively calm and the bottom muddy, current interference has been proved only in the surface waters. The comparatively abundant benthos, even if impoverished, does not indicate a deep-water environment; the fauna, however, does not show influence of a near shore."
• "fine grained shales with abundant minute flakes of clastic mica. The original color was bleached to light brown by weathering... contain thin coarser silty laminae with fossils. Some layers are strongly compressed...well preserved fossils occur only in the less disturbed parts, in which deformation has resulted mainly in compression."

Collection methods: Collection is reposited in the Geological Survey in Prague.
