Western Prince of Wales Island, Section 10, Unit 2, GSC loc. C26919 (Devonian of Canada)

Also known as Ancillotoechia-Cyrtina Community

Where: Nunavut, Canada (73.5° N, 100.0° W: paleocoordinates 2.2° S, 30.2° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Lochkovian (419.2 - 410.8 Ma)

• Unnamed formation. "Tentative age of early late Lochkovian (conodont fauna 3)..."

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: open shallow subtidal; gray, argillaceous, silty lime mudstone and gray, argillaceous, silty wackestone

• Deposits in this region are of two general kinds: shallow-water stable carbonate platform (generally in the NW part of Arctic Archipelago) and deeper basinal facies (generally to the SE). This collection is in the former. Smith's Ancillotoechia-Cyrtina Community, which he places in the third of six zones from nearshore to offshore, subtidal, below wave base. "...normal shallow-marine subtidal...quieter water than the G-A-S Community...large numbers of fossil fish in same beds as trilobites, brachiopods, and other normal marine fauna..."

•SEP environmental call based on given info and regional context

• Section as a whole: "Thin-bedded, silty, argillceous lime-mudstone containing argillaceous seams..." This unit: "LIme mudstone-wackestone: thin bedded, undulatory and lenticular in places; med. dk. grey; fetid, slightly silty, green-grey argillaceous sseams; well indurated; rare crinoids, solitary horn corals, brachiopods, also common to abundant fish at upper levels"

Reposited in the GSC

• Smith gives specimen counts.
