Codroy Area, Section D, Bed 118 (Carboniferous of Canada)

Where: Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada (47.8° N, 59.4° W: paleocoordinates 14.0° S, 10.5° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Searston Beds Formation, Mississippian (358.9 - 323.2 Ma)

• Codroy series (group?), Codroy Area, (Bell, 1948, p. 20) the Searston Beds are comprised of the highest beds in Section D, Bed 227 through the lowest beds in Section A, Bed 226.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; lithified, gray sandstone and lithified, gray siltstone

• Bel, 1948 p. 6 - "Type section of the Codroy series lies between Stormy Point and Codroy Village, a distance of about 3miles. Individual beds were measured by the writer, and are described in ...Section A to D." Siliciclastic sequence with sections of gypsum and minor limestones. "Two faults along which stratigrapic displacement has been particularly great lie between section A and D. Between them the beds of section B and C form part of an upthrust block, which is itself broken by faults of less consequence. The beds of section C in this block have been largely overturned to the south and thrust upward against beds of section D with a probalble stratigraphic displacement of more than 2500 feet. Also an upward dispacement of beds of section B against bed of section A may have equalled or exceeded this amount.'
• Bell, 1948 p. 14 (Bed 118 Sandstone, greenish grey, much crossbedded, with bands of grey siltstone, Calamites. 73 feet thick.)

Collection methods: quarrying,

• Bed containing marine fauna are also described in Codroy Series, Sections A to D from Codroy area.
