PRG-7-7206 (Cretaceous to of Canada)

Also known as Sub-Section PRG-7, Sample #7206, Alberta (Paskspoo Formation)

Where: Alberta, Canada (52.7° N, 116.0° W: paleocoordinates 60.6° N, 88.8° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Scollard Formation (Edmonton Group), Late/Upper Maastrichtian to Late/Upper Maastrichtian (70.6 - 61.7 Ma)

• The top of the section is approximately 1000 ft above the mouth of Chungo Creek; the base is delineated by the Wapiabi-Brazeau Formation contact which is found just below Brown Creek. The two creeks are less than 3 miles apart and both flow into the north side of the Blackstone River.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; shale

• shale and silty shale

Size class: microfossils

Preservation: original sporopollenin

Collection methods: surface (in situ), chemical, sieve,

• Method involved boiling 500-800 grams of rock in aqueous solution of Quaternary-O until dissolved, washing sediment through 4 screens (1000, 297, 125, 74 microns), and some additional treatment in hydrochloric and hydroflouric acids was used to remove carbonate and silicate minerals. The highly carbonized samples were oxidized with Schultze's solution and 10% potassium carbonate to lighten the spore color. The slides are now stored in the palynological collection of the Department of Geology, the University of Calgary.
