Valdecebro 4 (Miocene of Spain)

When: Alfambra Formation, Turolian (8.7 - 5.3 Ma)

• MN11, early Turolian, late Miocene.

Environment/lithology: white, silty marl

• 'The succession shows about 80m red sandy clays with some beds of sand and conglomerate, all belonging to the Peral Formation. Then follows a 2.2m thick bed of white marly limestone. The Valdecebro 4 mammal locality was at the base of this limestone, in a lens of white silty marl. On top follows another 17m of reddish clay succeeded by well bedded marly limestones, which capped the hill.'

• Specimens are stored at the Geologisch Instituut, Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht. 'The 1969 sample has yielded some remains of Hipparion and a small association of small mammals. This locality was discovered by J.M. Moltzer in 1969, but the fossiliferous lens has since been lost by erosion.'
