Pembina Member, Pierre Shale (Cretaceous of Canada)

Also known as Morden, Manitoba Pembina Member, Vermilion River Formation

Where: Manitoba, Canada (49.2° N, 98.1° W: paleocoordinates 53.5° N, 63.1° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Baculites obtusus ammonoid zone, Pembina Member (Pierre Shale Formation), Early/Lower Campanian (83.5 - 70.6 Ma)

• early Campanian, Pierre Shale also called Vermilion River Formation in older papers, but the member is the same

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; black shale and ash

• The Pembina Member is a black shale rich in selenite and is lithologically very similar to the Pierre Shale. The destructive effects of selenite form by weathhering are quite evident in both formations and often result in the loss of small bones. [most material reported comes from active bentonite mines] from ref 9541 (1999)

Size classes: macrofossils, microfossils

Collection methods: Samples F74.04.06, M84.12.8, and P80.06.14
