Alum Bay, Lower Barton Beds, Isle of Wight (Eocene of the United Kingdom)

Also known as "London Clay" (lowest bed)

Where: England, United Kingdom (50.7° N, 1.6° W: paleocoordinates 49.1° N, 5.5° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Lower Member (Barton Beds Formation), Late/Upper Eocene (37.2 - 33.9 Ma)

• Bowerbank's unit 9 (numbered from top to bottom), the lowermost in the "London Clay" series here. No one else has recognized the London Clay in this area. This bed is probably part of the Barton Beds (Bosma, 1974). Bowerbank gives the thickness of this bed as 83 paces. Gardner et al. are the first I've found who call these Barton Beds.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; shelly/skeletal, sandy claystone

• "London clay, commencing with a band abounding with Nummulites and minute shells"

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: Bowerbank's bed and outcrop descriptions don't match with Prestwich's (see note in collection 39696), this bed is perhaps the one that should jive with 39696. The bed orientation is vertical (per strat column in Bowerbank) so perhaps someone is turned around.
