USGS 17480, east of Yashitomi (FSM 27) (Pleistocene of Japan)

Where: Okinawa, Japan (26.2° N, 127.8° E: paleocoordinates 26.3° N, 127.6° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Shinzato Formation (Shimajiri Group), Gelasian (2.6 - 1.8 Ma)

• This may be Shinzato Tuff. Lower sand units were formely included in the Shimajiri beds, but they are disconformable with the underlying Shimajiri Formation. The lower sandy and silty part of the Ryukyu Group is divided into two elements, the Nakoshi Sand and the Chinen Sand. Presumably the two members are equivalent in age, but they are laterally not related. The Chinen sand is light gray to dark gray and more uniformely fine than the Nakoshi, and can have fine silt partings. Location assigned to Shinzato Member (now formation) by LeRoy (1964). Shinzato Formation correlated with planktonic foram zones PL5/6 and nannoplankton zones CN12b (upper part), 12c, and 12d by Ujiie (1994). This spans the latest Piacenzian and Gelasian, but a Gelasian age is assigned here following Sato et al. (1999) and Komatsubara et al. (2005).

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; poorly lithified, fine-grained, gray, silty sandstone

• Foraminifera suggest medium to deep neritic zone (LeRoy 1964)
• Light gray to dark gray, uniformely fine, can have fine silt partings. Poorly lithified based on outcrop photos in Sato et al. (1999) and sieve-washing extraction of foraminifera in LeRoy (1964).
