When: Lengshuigou Formation, Serravallian (13.8 - 11.6 Ma)

• Originally dated to Middle Miocene (Chow, 1978, Chiu et al. 1979), now MN7, Astaracian, Tunggurian.

•The Formation comprises grey-yellow and dark yellow muddy sandstones and terracotta red or grey-green mottled, red-brown sandy mudstones. Largest exposures are approximately 80m.

Environment/lithology: sandstone and mudstone

• A skull was found in 'terracotta-yellow, brown yellow sandstone.' A scapula was found slightly higher up the section in a variegated mudstone.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: A complete mastodont skull was recovered by the Lantian research team of the Institute of Vertebrate Palaeontology and Palaeoanthropology (IVPP), but some damage occurred during excavation.

•The faunal list in Chiu et al. (1979) is a conflation of 4 localities in the Lengshuigou Formation. Each locality has been entered separately here.
