• Beds containing plentiful fossils. Youngest Tertiary marine sediments in the district. Listed as "Wanganui Series" in the Gregg (1960), but these rocks are now mapped as Matemateaonga Formation, and will be Opoitian (Early Pliocene) in age (Hendy, 2003).

Environment/lithology: coastal; shelly/skeletal, sandy mixed carbonate-siliciclastic sediments

• Shallow, brackish-water assemblage.
• Likely to be shellbed facies.
