B-10 Namurian fauna, Pa Samed Formation, Thailand (Carboniferous of Thailand)

Where: Satun, Thailand (6.9° N, 99.8° E: paleocoordinates 24.9° S, 124.5° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Pa Samed Formation, Namurian (330.9 - 318.7 Ma)

• The proecanitids are most definite as to age and the material indicates a Carboniferous, Namurian age, and reference should probably be to the Arnsbergian through Yeadenian. That is to Nm1c to Nm2c on the Russian scales and Upper E2 to G1 in the European scale.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: submarine fan; lithified, tabular, fine-grained sandstone and lithified, lenticular shale

• Stratigraphic section indicates Bouma sequences interbedded with shale units.

•The absence from this Namurian fauna of calcareous algae is consistent with a subphotic zone position for the benthos. Relatively moderate brachiopod generic diversity is consistent with a moderately restrictiveenvironment, including one below the photic zone. Notable is the relative rarity of bivalves and gastropods, consistent with a deeper water environment. The overall disarticulated condition of the brachiopods indicates a reasonable level of turbulance and postmortem transport, but the moderate diversity is inconsistent with the mixing of many communities, i.e., the overall amount of net

• Thin bedded, laminated, fine sand with dark gray shale lenses, including a goniatite and brachiopod horizon.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression

Reposited in the BMNH

Taxonomic list

• The Goniatite section of this paper is not written in the standard systematic format and I am not convinced that the authors are sure of their identifications. The uncertainty comes from statements like: "This material seems best assigned to Stenopronorites cf. uralensis". Because of the uncertainty of the Gonaitite assignments, only orders are listed in fields but genera and species are listed in the comment fields. The brachiopod assignments are good.
