Stovall's Pit 8, Kenton (OMNH V97) (Jurassic of the United States)

Also known as OK-4, WPA, gator pit

Where: Cimarron County, Oklahoma (36.9° N, 103.0° W: paleocoordinates 32.4° N, 51.0° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Kenton Member (Morrison Formation), Tithonian (152.1 - 145.0 Ma)

• 34 m above the J5 unconformity

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: pond; mudstone

• "The bone-bearing horizon at Quarry 8 consists of a 20-cm-thick, fossiliferous lacustrine smectitic mudstone, which grades vertically to a 50-cm-thick, paludal mudstone facies. Capping the paludal facies locally is a 50-cm-thick, 5-m- wide, silty mudstone splay distributary channel. A 10-cm-thick floodplain mudstone bed overlies the silty splay mudstone bed and grades into banded mudstone paleosols, indicating the complete desiccation of the water hole."

Size class: macrofossils
