CH/f461 - Pitt Island [Matanginui Lmst] (Eocene of New Zealand)

Also known as GS 12137

Where: Chatham Islands, New Zealand (44.3° S, 176.8° E: paleocoordinates 54.5° S, 155.4° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Matanginui Limestone Member (Te Whanga Limestone Formation), Waipawan (55.8 - 53.0 Ma)

• THICKNESS: Matanginui Limestone is approximately 25 m thick at the type section. STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: Matanginui Limestone is the lower member of the Te Whanga Limestone and conformably overlies the Red Bluff Tuff, and is unconformably overlain by younger strata. AGE: It is assigned an Waipawan-Bortonian local stage=Thanetian-Bartonian age based on biostratigraphy from combination of faunal groups. The particular collection is dated as Late Waipawan=Ypresian.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal, calcareous grainstone

• Molluscan assemblages suggest warm, relatively shallow-water, undoubtfully oceasnic, with moderately deep water for part of the time (probably beyond shelf edge).
• Soft, bryozoan-calcarenite.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: quarrying,

• Collections reposited in Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (New Zealand Geological Survey) collections. Collected by MAC (1977)
