Barranc de la Costa Gran (Cretaceous of Spain)

Also known as Basturs-1, Orcau, Barranco de Bastús, Basturs-2, Point 8

Where: Cataluña, Spain (42.2° N, 1.0° E: paleocoordinates 34.2° N, 0.8° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Arén Formation, Late/Upper Maastrichtian (70.6 - 66.0 Ma)

• The fossil bed is a paleosol that developed on top of the Aren Sandstone Formation. It is overlain by the Tremp Formation. Originally assigned to "base of the Danian."

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; paleosol/pedogenic, medium-grained, coarse, hematitic, intraclastic, red, calcareous sandstone and fine-grained, medium, gray, yellow sandstone

• "locality was fully in the terrestrial realm and an unknown distance away from the beach."; "exposed sandy sediments of a beach-ridge plain"
• fine to medium-grained red sandstone rich in eggshell fragments. Grains are subangular and float freely in a cement matrix of microsparite and hematite. It is underlain by the gray and yellow sandstones of the Aren Formation. "The matrix of the eggshell-bearing rock is a calcite-cementerd, medium-to-coarse-grained arenite of mixed siliciclastic and carbonate grain composition. Carbonate grains comprise different types of worn skeletal fragments dominated by shallow marine elements, intraclasts as well as dinosaur eggshell debris, and are generally affected by microbial mineralization."

•Rosell: "reddish gray sandstones, with calcareous cement, passing locally to micro-clays."

Size class: mesofossils

Collected by Kühne, Lapparent, Bézier, Glachant, Sanz in 1955, 1958

Collection methods: quarrying, surface (float), mechanical,

• 38 egg clutches in the outcrop; discovered September 1958 by A. Lapparent accompanied by C. Bézier and N. Glachant
