Also known as block Θ of James and Stevens (1986)

Where: Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada (50.0° N, 57.8° W: paleocoordinates 30.4° S, 45.6° W)

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Orthidiella brachiopod zone, Factory Cove Member (Shallow Bay Formation), Rangerian (471.8 - 468.1 Ma)

• Rangerian in N. America; At Lower Head large fossiliferous blocks of light-colored limestone have been determined to be within the Whiterockian-age Orthidiella brachiopod zone (Ross and James, 1987) and are considered to be equivalent to Bed 14 of the Factory Cove Member of the Shallow Bay Formation on the Cow Head Peninsula (James and Stevens, 1986).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified, peloidal, gray grainstone

• The gastropods occur in light gray grainstone composed of well-sorted, sand-sized fragments of calcareous algae, micritized echinoderms, and peloids suggesting deposition in a shallow, high-energy environment.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: replaced with silica

Reposited in the GSC

Collection methods: bulk, chemical,
