Makkol (Ordovician of South Korea)

Also known as Maggol, Makgol, Sangdong; Taebaeksan Basin

Where: Kangwon-do, South Korea (37.2° N, 128.7° E: paleocoordinates 5.8° S, 132.4° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Jigunsan Formation (Taebaek Group), Llanvirn (468.0 - 458.4 Ma)

• Upper Abereiddian (Darwillian) (Kobayashi)

•The Jigunsan Formation (formerly spelled Chikunsan or Chigunsan Formation) is a subunit of the Taebaek Group and is Llanvirnian in age (see Kwon, 2005, Geosci. J. 9(4)). No particular horizons are given for the specimens listed (TL).

•Formation was originally entered as >> Chikunsan << . Since this is the old spelling it was corrected (see, e.g., Kwon, 2005) and name of the group was added (TL).

•Chronostratygraphy was originally entered as >> Early/Lower Llandeilo << and was changed to >> Llanvirn << according to more recent publications (e.g., Yu, 1999; Kwon, 2005) which give the Llanvirnian age based on Conodont data.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; shale and limestone

• The environments represented by the deposits of the Jigunsan Fm. range from deep-shelf/basinal in the transgressive/maximum flooding interval to shallow subtidal in the highstand interval (Woo & Chough, 2007, Geosci. J. 11(4)). (TL)

•Environment was originally entered as >> carbonate indet. << .

•Tectonic setting was added. (TL)

• "The Jigunsan Formation is a relatively thin (45-100 m in thickness) fossiliferous sequence of interbedded shale and subordinate limestone." (Niko, 2000, Paleont. Res. 6(1)). (TL)

•Primary lithology originally was entered as >> "limestone" << and was made the secondary lithology. >> "shale" << was added as primary lithology and both boxes were checked (TL).

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: UMUT = University Museum of the University of Tokyo (TL)

•Box for "survey of museums collection" was additionally checked (refers to the more recent papers). (TL)
