Ka 13, Kashpir locality on the Kuibyshev Reservoir, Volga River (Cretaceous of Russian Federation)

Where: Russian Federation (53.1° N, 48.4° E: paleocoordinates 47.5° N, 50.4° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Early/Lower Berriasian (145.0 - 140.2 Ma)

• Ka 13 - 0.50 m; Fulgens Zone; Upper Volgian, 'Traditionally, the Volgian was considered to be equivalent of the Tithonian stage. However, many data contradict these correlations (Sey and Kalacheva, 1993).'

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified siliciclastic sediments

• The Volgian formation is studied in the shore of the Kuibyshev Reservoir, between Gorodische and Dubky. The upper Volgian formation is also detailed at Kashpir, 4 km south of Syzran, on the Kuibyshev Reservoir. It corresponds to 18 m of terrigenous deposits, argillaceous in the lower part and sandy in the upper part, with intercalations of four major black shale horizons.
