Bridgeton - Kirkwood Formation (Miocene of the United States)

Where: Cumberland County, New Jersey (39.4° N, 75.2° W: paleocoordinates 39.6° N, 70.8° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Kirkwood Formation, Early/Lower Miocene (23.0 - 16.0 Ma)

• No lithostratigraphic details or stratigraphic relationships provided in text. Equivalent in age and slightly older than the Calvert Formaiton of Maryland and Virginia. Overlain by the Cohansey Sand with a time transgressive contact, Kirkwood Formation is Burdigalian-Langhian in age.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; unlithified, argillaceous, silty mudstone and pebbly sandstone

• No geologic or paleoenvironmental data reported in text. Deposited in a sublittoral to nearshore environments
• No lithologic data reported in text. Clayey to silty mudrock, massive sand, and thin pebble lenses.

Size class: macrofossils

Reposited in the USNM

• Collections reposited in USNM and USGS collections. From Richards and Harbison (1942: "Whitfield frequently speaks of a "stony layer" near Bridgeton and many of the fossulks in the various museums labelled "Bridgeton" are in the sandstone phase of the Kirkwood. The exact locality of the fossils was not given and no exposures can be found in the vicinityyu of Bridgeton today."
