#50 Bertram's Cave (Carboniferous of the United Kingdom)

Where: England, United Kingdom (52.8° N, 2.0° W: paleocoordinates 7.0° S, 1.6° E)

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: D1 zone, lower reef limestones Member (Carboniferous Limestone Formation), Asbian (340.0 - 336.0 Ma)

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: reef, buildup or bioherm; lithified, fine-grained, red, white lime mudstone and lithified, dolomitic, sandy reef rocks

• unweathered rock is pale or white with a distinctive red or lilac tinge. fine grained, consisting almost entirely of microscopic crystals of calcite which give the rock a porcellanous appearance. rock is banded...and represents layers of reef-forming calcareous algae. intercalated within these banded limestones are irregular patches of breccia consisting of large blocks of reef in a matrix of dolomitic sand.
