M4 clay bed, Tsunozu Gp - Ida, Shimane Prefecture (Pleistocene of Japan)

Where: Japan (35.1° N, 132.4° E: paleocoordinates 35.4° N, 132.0° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Tsunozu Group, Early/Lower Pleistocene (2.6 - 0.8 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: M4 clay bed of the Tsunozu Group. AGE: In the Ida area, the Plio-Pleistocene boundary is placed just above the M3 clay bed of the Tsunozu Gp. Accordingly the age of the M4 clay be is considered to be somewhat younger than the 1.6 Ma.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: transition zone or lower shoreface; unlithified claystone

• BATHYMETRY: Upper sublittoral zone. THERMAL TOLERANCES: Cool water fauna. The cool to cold Omma-Manganji molluscan fauna are prevalent, however the warm-water fauna is represented by a couple taxa. Temperate to cool marine climate.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: No lithology data reported in text, other than clay. LITHIFICATION: Presumed unlithified. No comments on lithification in text and no figures, but given age and lack of submarine burial, it is likely that this is an unlithified or poorly-lithified collection.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: COLLECTOR: Imamura, Okamoto and Amimoto. REPOSITORY: Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum.
