Punta Nati, Site 6 (Pliocene of Spain)

Where: Balearic Islands, Spain (40.1° N, 3.8° E: paleocoordinates 40.4° N, 3.3° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Early/Lower Pliocene (5.3 - 3.6 Ma)

• The endemic condition of the fauna makes a determination of the age of Nuralagus rex–Cheirogaster sites difficult. Nevertheless, both the close relationship of the leporid and the dormouse with continental Late Miocene Alilepus sp. and Muscardinus sp., respectively, and the karstification of the fissures in Late Miocene reef deposits allow a tentative estimation as Late Neogene (Lower Pliocene) for this fauna.

Environment/lithology: fissure fill; poorly lithified, pebbly, quartzose, red, calcareous mudstone

• Karstic infill within Jurassic dolostones, comprised of "red limestones [that] at this site include, together with the bones, angular calcareous clasts, dolomitic pebbles, some broken hexagonal dipyramid quartz crystals and fish teeth (Balistes crassidens, Sparus cinctus and Trigonodon oweni), that have been broken or eroded by plant roots.

•The dolomitic and calcareous clasts, along with the fish teeth, may have originated from both the Basal Unit and Lower Bar Unit of the Miocene series (Obrador 1969; Jurado 1985; Fornós 1987) while the hexagonal dipyramid quartz crystals may be from the Keuper facies (Lower Triassic), although, strangely, there are no exposures of this type in this area"
