Brachiopod fauna of Hemse bioherm at Ljugarn, LV3 (Silurian of Sweden)

Where: Gotland, Sweden (57.3° N, 18.7° E: paleocoordinates 16.6° S, 2.2° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Hemse Beds Formation, Ludfordian (425.6 - 423.0 Ma)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: reef, buildup or bioherm; lithified, shelly/skeletal limestone and lithified marl

• "The Hemse beds are a unit of biohermal limestone, bedded limestone, and marlstone about 100 m thick...At two areas [at Ljugarn] the rocks consist of in-place, coalescing stromatoporoid colonies, forming parallel, irregular layers which dip gently eastward. more extensive, surrounding outcrops contain more non-bedded stromatoporoid debris than in-place colonies. In addition to stromatoporoids, the debris deposits include algae, corals, crinoids, bryozoa, brachiopods, mollucs, trilobites, and ostracodes...[Compositional analysis of limestone given in some detail]."

Collection methods: This is one of several individual bed collections within 20 meters of one another.
