• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Mzinene Fm, which regionally overlies the Aptian-Albian Makatini Fm. THICKNESS: 20 cm thick bed within ~20 m section thickness. AGE: Albian IV based on ammonite biostratigraphy (occurrence of Oxytropidoceras); Middle Albian in Kennedy & Klinger, 2012. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: At very base of section.

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, pebbly, shelly/skeletal, carbonaceous siltstone

• ENVIRONMENT: No detailed environmental data reported in text.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Winnowed shell bed with scattered pebbles, abundant thick shelled bivalves, logs, presumably with siltstone matrix based on lithologies of adjacent beds. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, assumed on the basis of facies descriptions from regionally dominant lithology, and figures from subsequent publications (e.g. Kennedy and Kinger 1977).
