Locality 51, Bed 10 [Mzinene Fm] (Cretaceous of South Africa)

Where: South Africa (27.9° S, 32.3° E: paleocoordinates 48.9° S, 14.0° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Mzinene Formation, Late/Upper Albian (105.3 - 99.6 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Mzinene Fm, which regionally overlies the Aptian-Albian Makatini Fm. THICKNESS: 30 cm thick bed within ~20 m section thickness. AGE: Albian V (=Late Albian?) based on ammonite biostratigraphy. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: Near the middle part of the section.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, concretionary, shelly/skeletal siltstone

• ENVIRONMENT: No detailed environmental data reported in text.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Concretions, presumably with siltstone matrix based on lithologies of adjacent beds. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, assumed on the basis of facies descriptions from regionally dominant lithology, and figures from subsequent publications (e.g. Kennedy and Kinger 1977).

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: concretion

Reposited in the BMNH

• COLLECTORS: Collected by authors (W. Kennedy and H. Klinger) during 1970-1971. REPOSITORY: BMNH.

Taxonomic list

• COVERAGE: Includes ammonites, brachiopods, bivalves and gastropods. Abundance data may only apply to ammonites. NOMENCLATURE: Some of faunal list derived from authoritive publications, although for the most part this is not the case and taxa lack subgeneric or species-level designations. Nevertheless, authors are specialists and nomenclature appears fairly accurate and modern.
