Environment/lithology: lacustrine; poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal, black, brown, carbonaceous mudstone and unlithified sandstone

• The locality is in the so called "Ulmer Schichten" ("Ulm beds"), wich represent the Lower Freshwater Molasse in the Ulm area, the latter being part of the northern margin of the alpine molasse basin. The "Ulm beds" are also referred to as "subjurassic molasse" due to its position immediately south of the Swabian Jura (Schwäbische Alb) (Werner, 1994).

• "Graupensande" of the Brackwater Molasse (MN4b) cut down into deep brown to black marly, highly fossiliferous bituminous mudstones ('chocolate marls') of the Lower Freshwater Molasse, the latter being partly interspersed with gastropod shell debris (Werner, 1994) fossils are exclusively from the mudstones
