GGU 314914 - C.H. Ostenfeld Nunatak (A) (Cambrian of Greenland)

Where: Greenland (74.4° N, 22.8° W: paleocoordinates 30.5° S, 48.8° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Ella Island Formation, Dyeran (516.0 - 513.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From Ella Island Fm, which overlies the Bastion Fm and in turn the Kløftelv Fm (lower Cambrian) and is overlain by the Hyolithus Creek Fm (lower-middle Cambrian) and Dolomite Point Fm (middle Cambrian). STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From near top Ella Island Fm; correlative to GGU 313915. AGE: Well constrained to the late Early Cambrian (Dyeran Age or Bonnia-Olenellus Chron; see Palmer 1998) by the presence of Olenellid trilobites (Poulson 1932, Cowie and Adams 1957) and baltisphaerid acritarchs (Vidal 1979). THICKNESS: Thickness of formation at the Albert Heim section is 80-100 m.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified limestone

• ENVIRONMENT: High energy, shallow-water environment.
• GENERAL LITHOLOGY: Limestone, in places oolitic. LITHOLOGY: Lithified, based on figured specimens and facies description.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: bulk, chemical, acetic, sieve,

• Rock samples were dissolve in buffered 10 percent acetic acid to retrieve acid-resistent microfossils. The resulting residues were sieved and the heavy mineral fraction separated using sodium polytungstate. All specimens are housed in the Geological Museum in Copenhagen (MGUH)

Taxonomic list

• Exhaustive for Brachiopoda. The residues of the acid-digested samples contain a well-preserved and diverse small shelly fauna including helcionellid molluscs, coelosclerites, lapworthellids, and problematic fossils. Add Gubanov et al. press and Skovsted in press (at the time of April, 2005) for complete fauna - references in current reference.
