S127/f527 - Kokoamu Fm, Kokoamu escarpment (Oligocene of New Zealand)

Also known as GS5634; Coll# 3091 (Hendy PhD)

Where: New Zealand (44.9° S, 170.7° E: paleocoordinates 51.1° S, 174.8° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Kokoamu Greensand Formation (Otiake Group), Duntroonian (27.3 - 25.2 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Kokoamu Fm, which is the lower unit of the Otiake Group, overlain by Otekaike Limetone, and overlies the McDonald Limestone of the Alma Group.. AGE: Duntroonianin text of Gage (1957); Duntroonian = middle Chattian. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From upper part of formation.

Environment/lithology: coastal; lithified, glauconitic, shelly/skeletal, green, calcareous sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Shallow marine, silciclastic; break in sedimentation, possible slight emergence followed by renewed subsidence. Fauna of the Kokoamu is a clear water association of corals, brachiopods, and pectens. Sedimentation must have been slow and discontinuous.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Massive, pure greensand or very glauconitic sand, usually divisible into an upper calcified and fossiliferous part, and a lower barren part. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, assumed on the basis of age, and facies description.

Preservation: original calcite
