Pennington formation (overview) (Carboniferous of the United States)

Where: Washington County, Virginia (36.8° N, 82.3° W: paleocoordinates 16.2° S, 26.7° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Pennington Formation, Chesterian (335.5 - 323.2 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; lithified, argillaceous, silty, sandy, calcareous siltstone and sandstone

• complexly interbedded shale, sandstone, siltstone, and sandy or argillaceous limestone. shale is silty, micaceous, slightly calcareous and fissile. shales grade into siltstones that are generally calcareous, fossiliferous, and thin to thick bedded. sandstone beds are mostly very fine-grained, brown, argillaceous, and fossiliferous. basal channeling is present at a few outcrops. limestones are a minor component of the fm. they are very argillaceous, silty or sandy, and grade mainly into calcareous siltstones.
