Sankebetsu Fm (upper part) (Miocene of Japan)

Where: Japan (44.4° N, 141.7° E: paleocoordinates 45.1° N, 139.8° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Sankebetsu Formation, Early/Lower Miocene (23.0 - 16.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From Sankebetsu Fm (Sankebetsu Sandstone), which unconformably overlies the Sakasagawa Fm (Late Eocene) and is unconformably overlain by the Chikubetsu Fm (Middle Miocene). THICKNESS: Unknown thickness of unit. AGE: Early Miocene on the basis of molluscan biostratigraphy. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: Upper part of formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; lithified, silty sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Offshore siliciclastic environment.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Alternating beds of sandstone and siltstone. LITHIFICATION: Presumably lithified, on the basis of age.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: COLLECTOR: Based on previous collectors (see Noda 1992, 1995). REPOSITORY: Unknown repository.
