Kholmskaya Suite - Kholmsk District, Sakhalin (Oligocene of Russian Federation)

Where: Russian Federation (47.1° N, 142.1° E: paleocoordinates 48.3° N, 139.6° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Kholmskaya Formation (Kholmsk Group), Late/Upper Oligocene (28.4 - 23.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From Kholmskaya suite of the the "Kholmsk" horizon, which lies between the "Arakay" (Early Oligocene) and "Ulynin" (Early Miocene) horizons. THICKNESS: Total thickness of unit is 1200 m. AGE: Late Oligocene, on the basis of classification into the "Kholmsk" horizon. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: Composite checklist for formation in this area.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; lithified, concretionary, tuffaceous, silty, sandy, cherty/siliceous mudstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Not stated in text; assumed to be cool-water coastal siliciclastic setting on the basis of faunal composition.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Siliceous argillites interbedded with siltstones and sandstones with tuff and tuffaceous interbeds and marl concretions. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, on the basis of prior name "hard shale", age and facies.
