Pilengskaya Suite - Pilenga River, Smirnykhov District, Sakhalin (Oligocene of Russian Federation)

Where: Russian Federation (51.2° N, 142.7° E: paleocoordinates 52.4° N, 140.1° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Pilengskaya Formation, Late/Upper Oligocene (28.4 - 23.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Pilengskaya suite of the lower "Daekhuriin" horizon, which lies below the "Uynin" (Early Miocene) and above the "Machigar" (Early Oligocene) horizons. THICKNESS: Total thickness of unit is 1200 m. AGE: Late Oligocene, on the basis of classification into the "Daekhuriin" horizon. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: Composite checklist for the "formation" in this area.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep-water; lithified, concretionary, argillaceous, cherty/siliceous mudstone and poorly lithified, concretionary, argillaceous sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Not stated in text; assumed to be cool-water deep-water setting on the basis of faunal composition and sedimentology.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Flysch consisting of interbedded siliceous and stratified argillites and siltstones with interlayers of stratified siltstones. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, assumed on the basis of age and facies.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: COLLECTOR: Unknown, presumably Pleshakov (c. 1937). REPOSITORY: Unknown repository.
