Garrincho (Pleistocene of Brazil)

Also known as Toca do Gordo do Garrincho, Toca do Garrincho

Where: Piaui, Brazil (8.9° S, 42.6° W: paleocoordinates 8.9° S, 42.6° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Late/Upper Pleistocene (0.1 - 0.0 Ma)

• Kerber et al. 2016: Absolute ages from this locality include 14C on charcoal (10,020 ^ 290 years BP) and AMS on human teeth (12,170 ^ 40 years BP, 15,245 – 14,690 calibrated years) (Guidon et al. 2000; Peyre et al. 2009). Some datings by thermoluminescence and OSL were carried out, but they showed conflicting results (Felice 2006). More details from the Toca do Gordo do Garrincho site are available in Peyre et al. (1998, 2009), Guidon et al. (2000) and Felice (2006).

Environment/lithology: cave; argillaceous sandstone and lithified gravel

• megafauna is from argillaceous sands and cemented gravels: see Peyre et al. 1998
• Guerin et al.1993: Il s'agit cl'une grotte creusée clans un petit affleurement calcaire de même nature que pour les gisements précédents (carte Congo à 1/100.000), située à la base du massif, en contact avec le pédiment.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: quarrying

• specimen count is approximate; earlier figure of 170 given by Guerin was based on preliminary excavations
