Cape Possession [Pliocene] (Pliocene of Papua New Guinea)

Where: Papua New Guinea (8.6° S, 146.4° E: paleocoordinates 11.3° S, 145.6° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Pliocene (5.3 - 2.6 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From undescribed lithostratigraphy, hence stratigraphic relationships are unknown. AGE: Pliocene according to Chapman (1918), who states that a large percentage of taxa are found living in adjacent seas, but on the basis of new fossil taxa and faunal similarities with Indonesia, a Pliocene age is suggested, Dun (?) has previously stated a Pliocene or Pleistocene age. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From an unknown position with local section.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; unlithified, green sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Not stated in text, but appears to be relatively shallow shelf depths.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Sand, green (not glauconitic). LITHIFICATION: Unlithified, on the basis of age of extent of list.

Size class: macrofossils

Taxonomic list

• COVERAGE: Appears exhaustive for gastropoda and bivalvia, with many lists also providing foraminifera, and anthozoa. NOMENCLATURE: Material identified by F. Chapman (National Museum of Australia). Publication is not authoritative and very antiquated. Only taxa identified to species resolution are included by the enterer, to permit complete and accurate taxonomic vetting.
