Black Star Canyon Inoceramus-Acila Paleocommunity (Cretaceous of the United States)

Also known as Locality BS-2

Where: Orange County, California (33.8° N, 117.7° W: paleocoordinates 39.4° N, 87.1° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Holz Shale Member (Ladd Formation), Campanian (83.6 - 72.1 Ma)

• from "about 1 m of strata"

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lagoonal; lithified siltstone and lithified shale

• "in restricted marine water at shallow depths... perhaps the result of a lagoonal setting"

•the Holz Shale in general is "in a shallow marine setting, including prodelta, lagoonal and bay environments"

• "Brown to gray siltstone and shale with interbedded lenses of stringers of limestone, conglomerate, and sandstone"

•apparently well lithified because strata were "broken" and "disarticulated" during collection

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: surface (in situ),

• "selective collecting, by breaking the strata at the site"

•collections apparently are at the California State University at Fullerton
