South of Starkville (Paleocene of the United States)

Also known as M 499

Where: Mississippi (33.4° N, 88.8° W: paleocoordinates 36.6° N, 68.4° W)

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Clayton Formation (Midway Group), Danian (66.0 - 61.6 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Clayton Fm of the Midway Group. AGE: Early Paleocene. Clayton spans most of Danian, including nanofossil zones NP1, NP2, and NP3; foram zones P1a and P1c (absence of P1b attributed to ecological factors rather than a hiatus, by Schulte & Speijer, 2009). STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From unknown position in Clayton Fm.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified lithology not reported

• ENVIRONMENT: Not stated, but probably siliciclastic shallow shelf setting. Clayton primarily represents littoral (foreshore) and inner and middle neritic (offshore transition zone). The majority of the thickness likely represents offshore transition, with some shoreface settings, but with no stratigraphic or lithologic information this collection cannot be assigned an environment.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Unknown. Much of the formation is composed of calcareous sandstones, but also marls and sandy packstones. LITHIFICATION: Lithified based on figured specimen.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression

Collection methods: surface (in situ),

• COLLECTOR: Unknown. REPOSITORY: State University of Iowa.
