Locality 170, Bed 25 [Makatini Fm] (Cretaceous of South Africa)

Where: South Africa (27.2° S, 32.2° E: paleocoordinates 44.7° S, 1.5° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Makatini Formation, Late/Upper Barremian (130.0 - 125.5 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Makatini Fm, which is regionally overlain by the Mzinene Fm. AGE: Barremian II based on ammonite biostratigraphy (Colchidites and Sanmartinoceras zone). STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From bed near the lower upper part of the section, well above the top of the river cliff.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, concretionary, shelly/skeletal siltstone

• ENVIRONMENT: No detailed environmental data reported in text.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Concretions with molluscs, assumed to be siltstone based on surrounding lithologies. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, assumed on the basis of facies descriptions of adjacent beds, and figures from subsequent publications (e.g. Kennedy and Kinger 1977).

Size class: macrofossils

Taxonomic list

• COVERAGE: Includes ammonites, brachiopods, bivalves and gastropods. Abundance data may only apply to ammonites. NOMENCLATURE: Some of faunal list derived from authoritive publications, although for the most part this is not the case and taxa lack subgeneric or species-level designations. Nevertheless, authors are specialists and nomenclature appears fairly accurate and modern.
