Sometsu Road, Durban (Cretaceous of South Africa)

Where: South Africa (29.9° S, 31.0° E: paleocoordinates 46.2° S, 18.2° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Umzamba Formation, Campanian (83.6 - 72.1 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From unnamed lithostratigraphic unit, though the Umzamba Fm is suggested. AGE: Santonian-Campanian, on the basis of ammonite biostratigraphy. Possibly mixed, although biostratigraphic control is not great. A Campanian age is assigned by the enterer, although this may be refined subsequently. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From unknown position in section.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; poorly lithified, gray, green siltstone and poorly lithified, fine-grained, concretionary, glauconitic, pebbly, carbonaceous sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Shallow marine siliciclastic setting.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Soft grey-green silts, fine-grained sandstones with occasional angular pebbles and calcite-cemented concretions of the same material. Glauconite pellets, often oxidized to limonite, whilst foraminiferal and shell debris is frequent. Wood chips are common. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, based on facies and taphonomic descriptions.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression, concretion, original aragonite, original calcite, replaced with pyrite, replaced with phosphate

Collection methods: quarrying,

• COLLECTOR: Unknown collector, possibly L.C. King. REPOSITORY: University of Natal Geology Dept, Durban.
