O32/f8512 [Okarahia Sandstone] (Cretaceous of New Zealand)

Also known as S55/f512; GS6177

Where: New Zealand (42.5° S, 173.5° E: paleocoordinates 64.7° S, 144.1° W)

• coordinate based on unpublished field data

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Okarahia Sandstone Formation, Piripauan (85.8 - 83.5 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Okarahia Sandstone, which unconformably overlies Torlesse Supergroup, and is conformably overlain by the Tarapuhi Grit. AGE: Piripauan (=Coniacian-Santonian), on the basis of macrofossil biostratigraphy. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From bed of unknown position within formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal, silty sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Marine deposition under moderate energy conditions, probably not far from shore and at medium to shallow depths.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Shelly silty medium sand. LITHIFICATION: Poorly lithified, based on facies description.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression

Collected by Collins & Wellman in 1954; reposited in the IGNS
