Ishikari-Numata Station, east (Miocene of Japan)

Where: Hokkaido, Japan (43.8° N, 142.0° E: paleocoordinates 44.1° N, 141.1° E)

• coordinate stated in text

When: Horokaoshirarika Formation, Messinian (7.2 - 5.3 Ma)

• The diatom assemblage of the matrix of NFL 18 is assigned to NPD 7A (6.5–7.7Ma) of Yanagisawa & Akiba (1998), based on the occurrence of Rouxia californica and absence of Thalassionema schraderi and Neodenticula kamtschatica. The lack of Nitzschia pliocena suggests that the NFL 18 horizon is the upper part of NPD 7A (6.5–6.8Ma: latest Miocene, Messinian) (Supplemental material, Table 3).
