NYSM locality 6318 ( of the United States)

Also known as Canajoharie Quarry, Montgomery Co.

Where: Montgomery County, New York (42.9° N, 74.6° W: paleocoordinates 31.6° S, 68.7° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Sprakers Member (Tribes Hill Formation), Skullrockian (487.5 - 482.3 Ma)

• "Sprakers Member (= 'Fort Johnson Member' of Fisher, 1954), lower Tribes Hill Formation, Early Ordovician"

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: peritidal; lithified, bioturbated, dolomitic limestone and lithified, intraclastic, shelly/skeletal, silty limestone

• "Tremadocian onlap was succeeded by an increase in the rate of development of accommodation space in the Mohawk valley, and the lower half of the Tribes Hill Formation records a deepening from the peritidal facies of the lowest Sprakers Member through the subtidal, wave-dominated facies of the Van Wie Member." (Landing et al., 1996, J. Paleont. 70(4) p. 666);

•Given that the Wolf Hollow Member, which rests on the Van Wie Member, is interpreted as Highstand Systems Tract, the deepening upward of the Sprakers Member suggests that it represents the corresponding Trangressive Systems Tract. (TL)

• "The Sprakers Member includes several meters of thin- to medium-bedded, microcross-laminated, locally desiccation-cracked, sparsely burrowed dolostone and limestone at its base (Interval 1, above) and overlying, medium- to thin-bedded, intraclast-fossil hash limestone and calcisiltite (Interval 2). Medium-grey shale laminae become more numerous and pyritic, and limestone thickness decreases upward in the member" (Landing et al., 1996, J. Paleont. 70(4) p. 660)
