Lobitos (Punta Nautilus) (Eocene of Peru)

Where: Piura, Peru (4.4° S, 81.3° W: paleocoordinates 12.3° S, 109.8° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Terebratula Formation, Bartonian (41.3 - 38.0 Ma)

• LITHOSTRATIGRAPHY: From the Restin Fm of the Parinas Gp, which regionally overlies the Parinas Fm (late Middle Eocene) and Salina Gp and is regionally overlain by the Saman Fm (Late Eocene). Restin Formation is now called the Chacra Formation, but it seems likely that this locality is actually in what is now called the Terebratula Formation, as Fildani et al. (2008) measured a section at Punta Nautilus in that formation, and noted the presence of nautilids at several horizons. AGE: Regarded as late Middle Eocene (p. 9) =Bartonian, on the basis of molluscan biostratigraphy. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From unknown position within formation.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: transition zone or lower shoreface; poorly lithified, gray, green shale

• ENVIRONMENT: According to Fildani et al. (2008): "The Terebratula Formation is characterized by 2- to 3-m-thick cross-bedded sandstone beds with pebble- and shell-filled scoured bases. Conglomerate beds are also present. Coquina beds contain common brachiopods (terebratulidi) and Turritellae. Upsection, pervasively bioturbated shaly siltstone becomes predominant with interbedded cross-bedded thin layers of pebbly sandstone and shells. This formation is interpreted to reflect progressive deepening from foreshore to outer shelf depositional environments." Nautilids are indicated as occurring in the silty shales, indicating an offshore-transition environment.
• LITHOLOGY: Gray or olive colored shales. LITHIFICATION: Poorly lithified, on the basis of figured specimens.

Size class: macrofossils
