Sanaegol locality - SN730 (Ordovician of South Korea)

Also known as near Taebaeg (Taebaek), Taebaeksan Basin

Where: Kangweondo (Gangwon-do), South Korea (37.1° N, 128.9° E: paleocoordinates 3.0° S, 136.2° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Maggol Formation (Taebaek Group), Arenig (478.6 - 466.0 Ma)

• Bed 730 is in the upper middle part of the Maggol Fm., about 77 m below base of Jigunsan Fm. (Yun, 1999 fig. 2). The Maggol Formation is a subunit of the Taebaek Group and is largely Arenigian in age (see Kwon, 2005, Geosci. J. 9(4)).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: peritidal; tabular limestone

• "Based on sedimentary structures such as desiccation cracks, ripple marks, bird's-eye structures, and bioturbation, Paik (1985, 1987, 1988) suggested tidal flats as the depositional environments of the Maggol Formation." (Yun, 1999). In the paper on the sedimentary cycles of the Maggol Fom. by Woo (1999, Geosci. J. 3(3)) "well bedded limestones" are not mentioned and Yun (1999) does not give further details by which it might become clear which of Woo's (1999) facies types these "well bedded limestones" correspond to. However, in the stratigraphic log in fig. 2 in Yun (1999) bed 730 is sandwiched between dolomitic limestones below and dolomites above, suggesting an intertidal environment.
• "Lithologic components of the formation consist of bioturbated limestone, well bedded limestone and bioclastic limestone with frequent intercalations of dolomite and dolomitic limestone. Flat pebble conglomerates are included in the lower part of the formation, but they were not observed in the section examined." (Yun, 1999). The lithology of bed 730 is "well bedded limestone" according to stratigraphic log in fig. 2 in Yun (1999).
