BMR MC293, Blenheim (Permian of Australia)

Where: Queensland, Australia (21.1° S, 148.2° E: paleocoordinates 56.3° S, 140.7° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Blenheim Formation, Wuchiapingian (259.9 - 254.2 Ma)

• According to the stratigraphic column in Dickins et al. (1964), MC293 is from near the top of the Blenheim Formation, in "Fauna IV" of Dickins et al. and well above the Big Strophalosia Zone. The Big Strophalosia Zone contains the Pseudostrophalosia clarkei zone of Briggs (1998), correlated with the top of APP4.3 palynomorph zone (Briggs, 1998). Therefore, this locality is likely at a higher level, probably within APP5 palynomorph zone. The APP5 zone was constrained as mid-Wuchiapingian through Changhsingian age by U-Pb dating in Laurie et al. (2016). However, overlying units in the Fort Cooper Coal Measures yield latest Wuchiapingian U-Pb ages (Phillips et al., 2018), constraining the upper Blenheim Fm to Wuchiapingian.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified siliciclastic sediments

Size class: macrofossils
