Collection methods: PREPARATION TECHNIQUES: A standard hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching technique (Pessagno & Newport 1972) was used to recover siliceous residues from both samples, which contained numerous sponge spicules and small numbers of radiolarians. After treatment by HF etching, more than 140 radiolarian specimens were picked from dried residues and mounted on stubs for observation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM, JEOL JSM-5600 at Niigata University).
