Loc. 107, De Long Mountains [Kuna Fm] (Carboniferous of the United States)

Also known as 97AK74B & 97AK74E

Where: Alaska (68.3° N, 162.2° W: paleocoordinates 32.7° N, 11.5° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Kuna Formation, Serpukhovian (330.9 - 323.2 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Kuna Formation, which is overlain by the Siksikpuk Fm (Carboniferous-Permian). AGE: Radiolarians indicate an age of, most likely, late Late Mississippian to early Middle Pennsylvanian (Chesterian to Morrowan). Conodonts from this locality (97AK74F, ~40 ft above base of section) indicate that these strata are no younger than early Chesterian (see table 3); placed in Serpukhovian to avoid stratigraphic orphaning. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: Samples from Kuna Formation; part of 158-ft-thick measured section of upper Kuna and lower Etivluk Group (Siksikpuk Formation). We consider the contact between the two units to occur ~88 ft above the base of the section, at the top of a horizon of mammiform structures as much as 1 ft high. See table 3 for conodont samples from this locality. 74B taken ~16 ft above base of section (72 ft below top of Kuna) from medium-dark-gray to black chert in nodular beds 0.5 to 10 cm thick with shale partings.

•74E taken ~34 ft above base of section (54 ft below top of Kuna) from similar chert in beds to 5 cm thick with black shale partings.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, nodular, black, gray, cherty/siliceous mudstone

• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Medium-dark-gray to black chert in nodular beds. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, on the basis of facies description and preparation techniques.

Size class: macrofossils

Collected by Kelley in 1997; reposited in the USNM

• COLLECTOR: J. S. Kelley. REPOSITORY: Presumably USNM.
