Cerdas (Miocene to of Bolivia)

Also known as Cerdas beds

Where: Bolivia (20.9° S, 66.3° W: paleocoordinates 21.4° S, 62.1° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Burdigalian to Burdigalian (20.4 - 13.8 Ma)

• The stratigraphic section is exposed on both sides of the road between Cerdas and Atocha and is about 250 m thick (Fig. 2), spanning ca. 3800–4050 m elevation.

•There are multiple fossiliferous levels shown in fig. 2.

•This collection had been assigned to the Langhian, but the dates also fall within the Burdigalian.

•Townsend and Croft 2010: Friasian?

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; silty sandstone and mudstone

• The lower third of the section mainly consists of siliciclastic channel and overbank deposits, including thick paleosols (Garzione et al., 2014), whereas the upper two- thirds is mainly composed of volcaniclastic sediments deposited by debris flows (lahars) (see Croft et al., 2009, for details.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Collected in 2012-2014
