Hobbs Hill (Triassic of South Africa)

Also known as Windvogelsberg, Windvoƫlberg, Cathcart

Where: Eastern Cape, South Africa (32.3° S, 27.1° E: paleocoordinates 67.3° S, 19.9° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Lystrosaurus Assemblage, Procolophon subzone zone, Katberg Formation (Beaufort Group), Olenekian (251.2 - 247.2 Ma)

• "middle-upper Katberg Formation, Beaufort Group, Karoo Supergroup, uppermost

•Lystrosaurus AZ (Kitching, 1977), late Early Triassic (Olenekian). [...] Kitchingnathus untabeni was most likely collected in the middle or upper horizons of the Katberg Formation, a stratigraphic assessment that is consistent with the presence of the index genus Procolophon at the locality. The occurrence of Procolophon in South Africa is restricted to the interval between the middle part of the Katberg Formation and the lowermost Burgersdorp Formation (Neveling, 2004; Smith and Botha, 2005; Botha and Smith, 2006)." (Cisneros, 2008).

Environment/lithology: fluvial; red sandstone

• "It [the Katberg Formation] was deposited under arid climatic conditions within the more distal parts of a sandy, bedload-dominated, ephemeral braided stream complex draining a source area composed predominantly of granitic, metamorphic and alkaline volcanic rocks (Hiller and Stavrakis, 1984; Smith, 1995)." (Catuneanu et al., 2005, J. African Earth Sci. 43)
• "bright red sandstone" (Cisneros, 2008)

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression

Collected by J. W. Kitching in 1952, 1966; reposited in the BPI

• "Besides the holotype of Kitchingnathus untabeni, the locality Hobbs Hill has yielded several Procolophon trigoniceps specimens collected during field trips led by James W. Kitching in 1952 and 1966." (Cisneros, 2008).
