Upper Sespe Creek, unit 6a - white member [Santa Margarita Fm] (Miocene of the United States)

Where: Ventura County, California (34.4° N, 119.0° W: paleocoordinates 34.0° N, 116.4° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Santa Margarita Formation, Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 5.3 Ma)

• LITHOSTRATIGRAPHY: From the Santa Margarita Fm, which overlies the Monterey Fm (Middle-Late Miocene). AGE: Late Miocene, on the basis of macrofossil and microfossil biostratigraphy. STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the White Member (a) of unit 6 (Santa Margarita Fm), a 200-300 ft thick sandstone that unconformably overlie the Monterey Fm and is overlain by the "phosphatic member".

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; white sandstone and brown siltstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Not discussed in text, but appears to be shallow marine siliciclastic.
• LITHOLOGY: Massive, white sandstone, locally cross-bedded and tan siliceous siltstone. LITHIFICATION: Unknown.

Size class: macrofossils
